like toffee with a new texture that's tasteless! the weird toffee is just for textural fun in the mouth. while playing its hard surface with back teeth, saliva begins oozing out slowly, making it wet and soft, suddenly the surface peels off little by little, its rough interior appears, still rolling on the tongue, wondering what kind of layer is revealed, soon the deeper layer is separated, the gluey something begins sticking to the teeth, just before it melts away, tiny hard grains spread fully around the mouth... . .

at the beginning of this project, the title was u.f.o. (unidentified frequency oscillator). while processing the sound files for this project, suddenly, an image came to my head: a switch on my forehead. it became very obsessive to me. i decided to change the title from u.f.o. to the switch.

i was recalling when i was child, it was great fun to play with the switches on the panel of audio devices. such as; tape recorders, amplifiers, radios, etc. these new electric toys gave me much influence in my improvisation. and yes, it was greater fun than practising the piano.

and i understand why the switch on my forehead. i am still doing the similar things with the new audio device: personal computer. i am just playing with the switches on the screen, like in my childhood.

i may be obsessed by the switch on the panel of u.f.o.

Yamaoka Yasuhiro - Four Variations in Stretch (2013)

Yamaoka Yasuhiro Four Variations in Stretch

01. Choir and the Phantom Strings
02. The Pianist Is Sleeping
03. Rocking Rolls
04. A Long Walk

Granular synthesis technology produces a quality of sound stretching without tonal pitch changes. When sound is over stretched, it causes a metallic feeling with a kind of quirky trembling from the granulated synthesis texture. Even though the result is not so smooth, the effect is like a microscopic view, zooming into the details of the sound. With this technique, the sound can be controlled for the wished duration and pitch, and short sound can be transformed into another kind of longer aural experience.

Four Variations in Stretch was created with this stretch technique and pitch changes from May to December 2013 by Yamaoka Yasuhiro.

Choir and the Phantom Strings: male chorus, The Pianist Is Sleeping: piano, Rocking Rolls: electric guitars, basses and drums, A Long Walk: a city noise.

EPF (1999-2006)

YOFonts EPF

I wanted to make the new font for my YOWorks web site around 1999. Sketches for some characters were drawn, but these had never been realized. Instead of this plan, I used Pixe and Smoo in some web pages of my YOWorks.
Around 2002, I picked up the sketches for upper cases, and made a font containing only upper cases with alternative characters; assigned into lower case keys. This font is called EPF. Later, I picked up the lower case sketches, and made a font containing only lower cases: similar to EPF. These two fonts come to build one font family which consists of EPF UC and EPF LC. Combining UC and LC in 2003, here the new family members have appeared: EPF UUL and EPF LUL. This sanserif font family in geometric, modern and naive feeling has been compiled like this way.
Added bolder compliments for EPF family in 2006, made additional characters in 2008 and 2013.

EPF is designed by Yamaoka Yasuhiro 1999-2006.

Technotch (1996)

YOFonts Technotch

Technotch was designed originally for my music project in 1996, but this has been never used and has been forgotten. In 2013, I made Technotch Alternative. with the unused alternative characters.
I was about to change the font name, because this name seemed a little far from the image of the type set. On the other hand, I don’t know why, this typeface reminds me Japanese Techno Pop scene in 80’s. So, the name is still remained.

Technotch is designed by Yamaoka Yasuhiro 1996.

Classiq (1992-2013)

YOFonts Classiq

Just after designing Practica, I began to draw another typeface in 1992 that was tentatively called Garamond Sans. As the name shows, this sans serif face has references to the various versions of Garamond including ATF, Monotype, Simoncini, Stempel, Adobe and so on. Practica is a sans serif face with a bone structure that is derived from Apple Garamond, but one that has a different proportion than the original Garamond. I then thought it would be an interesting challenge to make another sans serif adaptation of this well-known Old Roman style mid 16th century typeface.
Modern versions of the typeface Garamond are essentially based on the original cuts by Claude Garamond, however, some of the modern revivals, that I used as references, are based on re-cuts by Jean Jannon. Their italics are based on a design by Robert Granjon. The structure of the typeface that I have drawn is a mixture of these, therefore, in 2002, I changed the name of my Garamond Sans to Classiq.

Initially, my Garamond Sans only had a regular weight. The drawings were on paper; some of them were digitized, some were not. They just looked like sketches that were never completed and forgotten for a while. Later in 2002, I decided to expand the original weight to include 6 variations, and then changed the name of this typeface to Classiq. I discarded the old drawings on paper, and began to draw my new character variations on computer. I still could not pick the right ones from these additional variations, so just before the completion of Classiq, I constructed another family, Classiq Choix, with some alternative characters that included tabular numerals. Choix has a little more modern feeling than does the regular set of Classiq.

After the completion of Classiq I decided to make another alternative family with tails: Classiq Queue. I still had an idea for italic characters with tails that referred to Garamond Italic, but I almost abandoned this. At first, it only served as an italic accompaniment to the regular upright Classiq. Later I added shorter tails to the upright characters; then rebuilt the Queue family. The Queue italic looks closer to the Garamond Italic, but as a result, the Queue upright looks as if it has come far from its original reference.

Classiq is designed by Yamaoka Yasuhiro 1992-2013.
